Wheels
Sorry blogwatchers, nearly three weeks since my last update, no significant reason I'm afraid, been doing much the same and I was waiting for some news myself but I thought I'd better update my blog incase people thought I'd fallen off the edge of the world. Yes, I've been waiting to hear about some applications I've sent out but as usual things move about a tenth as fast as we'd like then one percent of the time things move at 500 miles an hour.Possibilities of work:
I've applied to the National Museum of New Zealand for a job, that would be extremely tasty - creating artwork for displays, visuals, publicity.
I had an interview the other day with a signage company, the interview went quite well I think but we'll see what happens.
Went to see a lady about a massive project where she's painting a mural on a 10m x 10m wall and was interested when I made contact. It's actually a huge job where the whole of a research establishment is being converted to an arts college. It's early days though for the project.
Learning Media - the main NZ educational publishers like some of my illustration work and want me to keep in touch.
With all the wood work I've been doing lately I've applied for a job (flexible/part time?) as a timber worker doing creative timber products. It's the sort of thing that excites me, also I'd be free to do artworking for the rest of the time. My visual blogs are proving quite popular, employers who don't need me have commented (positively) which is encouraging. They like them.
I'm studying 2 graphics programmes at the moment which would be very useful to be competent at. I've also been doing more watercolours with a view to getting a small collection together for putting into gallery shops.
All that seems quite dull but I guess if I don't write the words down people don't know what I'm up to and think I could be laying in bed til lunchtime or out surfing when I should be looking for a job. Not that I surf, however, also it's been rather rough weather recently. I checked the BBC website today and in England it's 35'C! I'm not the kind of bloke who thinks hotter is better, but at the moment I'm going to bed with a hot water bottle which is not exactly what you expect!
Other news:
We've been making good progess with getting to know the little kitten who's been sneaking in and robbing us of food. I've decided to call him Frodo because he's a little guy with a stout heart. I've caught him a few times when he's got stuck in a room or something (or when I feel like I need a cuddle) and he very quickly loves the contact and starts purring, loudly (he sounds like a 50cc motorbike!) Cathie's been wooed by him too and she went as far as deciding to let him dine here instead of shooing him out. I think I've created a monster though, I made a 'cat fishing rod' out of a stick and some white cord so I could play with him. He absolutely loves it but several times in the morning Cathie's found an untidy mess of her knitting wool in the middle of the floor - each time it was white wool! Oops, sorry!
Ready to pounce on a piece of white string
Other stuff:
I'm now mobile with my own wheels at last. Well a bicycle which I was given through Freecycle.org. It's a great idea, there's always people getting rid of stuff and people needing stuff so Freecycle connects the two. I gave away my aquarium when I was moving out of my flat through Freecycle and now I've got a er Free Cycle from it. I've equipped the bike with lights, new pedals, working brakes etc and the rear wheel doesn't fall off when I change gear now which I generally find more convenient. I bought a rear carrier for 50p at the local dump, painted it with silver enamel and Cathie let me bake it in the oven for a couple of hours to harden the enamel!
Can you spot Frodo in the background playing 'Where's Wally'? He's admiring my bike too.
Oh, apologies to all those people who have been asking about developments with my kelp sandals project. The complaints have risen to a clamour (oh, ok, two people asked about it). I made the school boy error of cutting the parts to fit while the kelp was still fresh but when dried they would only have fitted, well a school boy. I haven't had a chance to collect some more kelp. I'll dry it properly next time then cut it to fit my extremely manly sized feet.
Other kelp news : You can make kelp into table salt. Grind it up and it's fabulously nutritious, plus it tastes nice too. I had some the other day.
Next week I'm starting house-sitting for a month a few k's up the valley in a stunning spot. I'm looking forward to it, I should have lots of time to really study the two graphics programmes I'm learning as well as being able to paint a lot more than currently. This week I've been building a shed for Cathie for my board and lodgings. (I mean the WORK is towards my lodgings, the shed won't BE my lodgings - I haven't upset her that much!) It's made of recycled pallets and is extremely heavy and solid. I've always wanted to build a shed out of pallets, I'm just that kind of guy. I may not be earning much at the moment but I'm getting by on my own, being creative and producing so my net flow is in the right direction I think. I may not be a 'typical consumer' but my energy footprint is minimal. Anyway, after all, what is work for? To survive and prosper. Employment will come I'm sure. Hopefully my next blog should have more developments. 'Enshala' (arabic : 'God Willing')
